Stakelogic’s US debut begins with Michigan

June 20, 2022 by Admin

Stakelogic has entered the burgeoning US iGaming market after the provider obtained a provisional operating licence in Michigan. The state’s local regulator issued the Provisional Internet Gaming Supplier Licence that will allow Stakelogic to offer its content in the region.

Stakelogic stated that this launch serves its wider objective of establishing and cultivating a presence as a top casino content provider in the North American market. The company plans to expand to additional states in the coming months.

The company went on to add that its selection of premium pokies features “impressive animations and artwork, big sound and thrilling gameplay,” paired with superior bonus features that engage and reward players.

Stakelogic’s CEO, Stephan van den Oetelaar, gave his comments on the milestone development, saying,

“Securing approval to launch in Michigan is a milestone moment for Stakelogic and our ambitions for the US market where we intend to become a leading provider of popular online casino content. Our classic slots and video slots have taken global markets by storm, and we expect them to be a big hit with players in Michigan and across the US. We are already in talks with operators in Michigan and look forward to integrating our slots in due course.”

“I’d like to thank the Michigan regulator for working with us on securing our licence, and we now look forward to seeing players in the state enjoy the engaging and entertaining experience our games deliver with each spin,” he concluded.

Solid State

Stakelogic is one in a series of iGaming providers to enter Michigan’s lucrative market in recent months. The list of successful recent applicants includes big industry names like Wazdan, Evolution, and Inspired. The state has been aggressively cultivating its gambling market, shutting down illegal operations, and ensuring that its local players experience safety and fairness when they partake.

Michigan achieved its highest ever iGaming revenue level of US$131.7m in March 2022, although recent reports indicate a slight but not insignificant dip in revenue for May.

SkyCity soars as Covid restrictions fall

June 14, 2022 by Admin

Major casino operator SkyCity Entertainment Ltd. Recently reported that its New Zealand and Australian businesses have started seeing signs of recovery as Covid-19 restrictions have fallen away and borders are reopened.

The company recently revealed that it predicts a normalized net profit of $3.5 million to $7.0 million for its financial year ending June 30.

In an official release, the operator stated,

“Following recent relaxation of Covid-19 operating restrictions, SkyCity has seen strong performance from its local gaming businesses, particularly in New Zealand.”

The company added that Hotels and other non-gaming businesses were also seeing an increase in domestic tourism.

Change of Fortunes

This development is a profound improvement from February 2022, when SkyCity revealed that it had suffered a $337 million loss for the first half of the financial year. At the time, its flagship SkyCity Auckland Casino had been closed for 107 days up until December 2021. Over the lockdowns, SkyCity Hamilton was shut down for 65 days, SkyCity Queenstown for 22 days, and SkyCity Adelaide fared best, only being shuttered for eight days.

Once the casinos received their respective reopening dates, they were all subjected to government-related restrictions. Mask mandates were enforced along with capacity restrictions and social distancing.

In March of 2022, with the promise of reduced restrictions on the horizon, SkyCity embarked on a massive recruitment drive as it sought to fill hundreds of positions.

Capacity restrictions were eventually lifted in New Zealand, and its borders reopened in April 2022, triggering the operator’s path to recovery as fully vaccinated Australian tourists were granted access to the country.

New Attraction

SkyCity recently debuted a brand new multi-sensory attraction in its Auckland Sky Tower. The Skyslide is a 360-degree virtual reality tour of the city skyline via a glass slide that will give those visiting the experience a full view of the glory of Auckland.

SkyCity’s Chief Operating Officer, Callum Mallett, commented on the launch of the new attraction, saying,

“We’re really excited to be opening such an adrenaline-pumping attraction at the Sky Tower. There is nothing like this in Auckland or even New Zealand. The Sky Tower is a much-loved New Zealand icon, and now Kiwis can use virtual reality to fully immerse themselves in an experience that would have previously only been available in their imagination.”

June 10, 2022 by Admin

Industry-leading online casino specialist LeoVegas has finalized a deal to add premium iGaming content from top supplier Kalamba Games. The agreement serves to boost the online casino provider’s offering while giving Kalamba increased exposure to a massive market of international players.

Kalamba Games has a long-running reputation for delivering immersive and rewarding online casino games and recently launched its new Blazing Bull: Cash Quest pokie. Kalamba’s top-performing titles, including games from its Blazing Bull and Joker series, are now available for players to discover and enjoy at LeoVegas.

Mutual Growth

In an official statement, Steve Cutler, the CEO and Co-Founder of Kalamba Games, said,

“Delivering to players the widest variety of high-quality entertainment and cutting-edge technology is a key goal within our growth strategy at Kalamba. This latest partnership will help deliver and exceed this ambition as we move to the next phase of the Kalamba journey.”

The deal enables the studio to establish a wider presence across key regulated European regions and the LatAm region.

Andrew Crosby, the CCO for Kalamba Games, added,

“Delivering our slot titles to a prestigious and well-known casino like LeoVegas is a testament to our rapid growth in recent years. Its reputation as the go-to mobile-focused casino for players globally represents a true growth opportunity for our games to be played by many new customers.”

New Horizons

Ownership of LeoVegas may soon change hands if recent acquisition efforts by land-based casino giant MGM are successful. MGM has bid US$607 million to acquire all of Leovegas’ share capital. It plans to extend its reach and profitability by leveraging the operator’s existing access to the European online gambling market.

Bill Hornbuckle, chief executive and president of MGM Resorts, commented on the offer, saying,

“Our vision is to be the world’s premier gaming entertainment company, and this strategic opportunity with LeoVegas will allow us to continue to grow our reach throughout the world,” he said. “We have achieved remarkable success with BetMGM in the US, and with the acquisition of LeoVegas in Europe, we will expand our online gaming presence globally.”

“We believe that this offer creates a compelling opportunity that allows the combined teams of MGM Resorts and LeoVegas to accelerate our global digital gaming growth and fully realize the potential of our omnichannel strategy. We look forward to being able to welcome the LeoVegas team to our MGM Resorts family,” Hornbuckle concluded.

The deal has drawn positive reactions from LeoVegas’ leading shareholders and, if successful, is expected to close in the second half of 2022.

SkyCity thrilled at Orange status but isn’t quite ready yet

April 15, 2022 by Admin

Major casino and hotel operator, SkyCity has praised the country’s shift to the orange traffic light level, stating that this is a welcome development for the tourism and hospitality industry.

The status comes with a relaxed set of rules, including an end to gathering limits and the removal of the requirement for restaurant patrons to be always seated and separated.

The country’s Covid-19 Minister, Chris Hipkins, recently announced the transition to a less stringent pandemic response strategy, citing falling case numbers and saying,

“We are over the peak, we are coming down the other side; in some places we’re coming well down”

Callum Mallett, SkyCity’s CEO expressed the company’s excitement at the news but added that, even with increased capacity, it would still take a few days for the company to return to normal operations.

“The ability for customers to find those bookings in the time that we have could be challenging but most operators will move pretty quickly to ensure they can welcome as many guests as possible,” Mallett said.

Normalcy Returns

Australians are now permitted to enter New Zealand without the requirement of isolating, provided that they are vaccinated and test negative for Covid-19. As a result, booking figures for flights between the two countries have increased slightly, but the casino operator has remained realistic, predicting that an immediate huge influx of visitors is unlikely.

Mallet advised that while the current numbers are minimal low, this is a positive development, nonetheless.

“The Australian market being open is a significant step because now even if they don’t rush to book, the opportunity exists for them to book and as airlines increase frequency of flights we’re really confident that the Australian market over time will return to like it was pre-Covid,” he said.

The CEO concluded by stating that the Asian market still has a long road to recovery, with low expectations of the overall numbers returning to anything resembling pre-Covid levels in the coming summer.

NZ government says a firm ‘no’ to facial recognition funding

March 25, 2022 by Admin

New Zealand’s gaming industry’s 2018 adoption of a facial recognition system was prompted by the Gambling Act 2003. The technology was developed via collaboration between COMS Systems and Torutek Holdings Limited and was being implemented on a test basis across selected venues.

The objective of this innovation was to identify problem gamblers and subsequently prevent them from entering gaming rooms.

The gaming machine association (GMA) recently petitioned the government for funding for the technology, as the cost involved was proving to be a barrier in establishing gambling harm-minimisation measures.

The GMA’s chairman, Peter Dengate Thrush, recently announced that the national Ministry of Health had declined to contribute towards the cost of facial recognition software for gaming machines. For its part, the government concluded that funding software licenses for gambling venues would be an improper action by the Ministry of Health.

Thrush explained these systems would be effective in the fight against problem gambling as they would notify venue owners of the presence of at-risk gamblers who should not be there. While the tech has been installed at many venues, more funding is required to ensure that it is implemented countrywide.

Thrush stated, “There are 148 facial recognition systems already installed in venues across New Zealand. The class 4 industry, the societies spent $3.5m themselves because they don’t want problem gamblers in their venues.”

He went on to explain that Ministry’s refusal to direct problem gambling funds towards Facial Recognition systems is a hindrance to the self-determination efforts of the country’s casino operators. The organization requested that the Ministry of Health pledge its unspent $1.5m technology fund to funding for software licensing.

Counter-Argument

The Department of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Health advised via a Ministry spokesperson that it “would not be appropriate for the Ministry of Health to fund software licenses for gambling venues.”

The spokesperson elaborated, saying that the gaming venues had already received a commission payment of over 16% of gaming machine revenues to offset the operational costs of hosting gambling activities. She also said that this amount includes the price of meeting harm minimisation requirements.

The spokesperson added that the ministry has funded a database that stores photos securely in support of facial recognition systems, with venues allowed to access this data via their installed systems and stated that Pokie machine operators should cover the licensing software costs themselves.

Andree Froude, the Communications Director at the Problem Gambling Foundation supported this position, explaining that the pokie owners have a responsibility to their customers and, therefore, are obliged to absorb the cost of licensing.

Froude added, “The system at the moment often involves the person who is gambling providing a photo and then the venue making sure they are not entering the venue, so it is quite cumbersome.” She further cautioned that technology is too often seen as a cure-all for gambling problems.

Pragmatic Play enhances Live Casino offering with new table games

March 1, 2022 by Admin

Pragmatic Play’s live casino offering has received a fresh influx of content with a selection of new gaming tables for its Live Casino portfolio.

The firm shared in a recent media release that it was “launching numerous new tables” in its baccarat, speed baccarat, and blackjack ranges.

The company explained that 15 new tables in total have been added to its blackjack product for Live Casino and that online casino operators can access this fresh content via a new studio.

The statement continued, saying,

“Play enhancements include popular side bets ‘Perfect Pairs’ and ‘21+3’, while a ‘Bet Behind’ option makes each seat of the table multi-player. The ‘Early Decisions’ feature makes gameplay smooth and engaging.”

The company also mentioned that Speed Baccarat would be receiving 2 new gaming tables. Upgrades

The provider added that several of the new tables are equipped with technology that allows for “bespoke customisation, to accurately represent operators’ brands”.

Ministry of Health vetoes pokie facial recognition tech funding

February 18, 2022 by Admin

The Gaming Machine Association of New Zealand (GMANZ) has appealed to the government to contribute to funding for facial recognition software in gambling venues to prevent gambling addicts from playing.

Preventative Members

The association has explained that this technology is designed to aid self-identified gambling addicts in their recovery, by barring them from using the machines as the facial recognition cameras would alert the owner of the venue to their presence.

Peter Dengate Thrush, the chairman of GMANZ shared that the cameras were “mostly funded” and already installed in many establishments.

Thrush urged the Ministry of Health to assist operators in paying for the software licensing with some of the funds it collects from the problem gambling levy on pokies. He added that the Ministry of Health’s unwillingness to make this contribution is “disrupting the self-determination efforts of problem gamblers”.

“There are 148 facial recognition systems already installed in venues across New Zealand. The class 4 industry – the societies – spent $3.5m themselves because they don’t want problem gamblers in their venues. What they’re looking for is for the Ministry of Health to use their unspent $1.5m technology fund for software licensing, which should be bought for the whole country at once so that every region gets a fair deal,” he added.

Government Response

A Ministry spokesperson advised that it has worked alongside the association on facial recognition software.

“As part of this service we fund a database that has the capability to securely store photos to support facial recognition systems, making it easier for venues to incorporate these into their systems,” they said.

The spokesperson also advised that the Ministry and the Department of Internal Affairs believed that it “would not be appropriate for the Ministry of Health to fund software licenses for gambling venues”.

“Venues receive a commission payment of up to 16 per cent of gaming machine profits to meet the operational costs of hosting gambling. This includes the costs associated with meeting harm minimisation requirements,” the spokesperson continued.

The Problem Gambling Foundation supported the Ministry’s position that pokie operators should cover the cost of licencing the software.

The foundation’s communications director, Andree Froude, characterised the current exclusion system as “cumbersome”.

“The system at the moment often involves the person who is gambling providing a photo and then the venue making sure they are not entering the venue, so it is quite cumbersome,” she said, before warning that the technology was being framed as a “magic bullet for preventing gambling harm”.

Froude explained those venues and the trusts that own the machines bear a “host responsibility” to players and that the cost of licensing the machines is their responsibility.
